A picturesque harbour town,, protected from the least favourite phenomenon,
‘mass tourism’, by its lack of obvious beaches - although the village pebble
beach has now been attractively extended by the Kalkan Foundation .
Indeed surveys of the past few years show that visitors felt that Kalkan’s
beaches and beach clubs were equal to those at Ölü Deniz – and that’s the most
famous beach in Turkey! By day Kalkan is a ghost town, as everyone heads for the
nearby beaches and beach clubs. A dolmus (local bus) from the village center
takes ten minutes to reach Kaputas Beach, a lovely pebble beach dramatically
positioned at the foot of a ravine – though be warned about the many steps!
Slightly further afield, though well worth the ride (forty five minutes), is
Patara Beach.
Kalkan has in past years proved extremely popular with older tourists due to
it's lack of 'mass tourism'
Beach clubs abound and are easily accessible. These are rock gardens cut into
the hillside offering sunbathing, swimming, water-sports, restaurant and bar
facilities, together with a wonderful ambience in stunning settings.
The Yacht Club is by the harbour, whilst the Likya and Mahal beach clubs are a
water taxi ride from the harbour. Kalamar beach club is a taxi ride away from
the village, but within walking distance of some hotels.
In the evening, Kalkan’s true colours show with a wonderful nightlife. Start the
evening drink in hand, admiring the sunset on your hotel roof terrace, before
strolling through the myriad of winding cobbled streets with colourful local
shops. Then perhaps another aperitif in one of the many roof-top bars. These
bars symbolize the Kalkan atmosphere – some play jazz, others classical or
contemporary music.....
Follow this with dinner at one of the excellent harbour side, village or hotel
restaurants. As there are so many to choose from. You will have enormous fun
discovering them!
Follow dinner with a coffee and brandy in one of the star-topped bars before
retiring wearily to bed. Alternatively, if you have the energy, visit the Club
Patara nightclub, a short taxi-ride away, or move onto one of Kalkan’s late
night music bars.
Kalkan is set in an area of Turkey steeped in history, right in the heart of the
old Lycian region. There are many ancient sites in the immediate vicinity
including Xanthos& Letoon, Pinara, Tlos and Patara. Slightly further afield are
the marvellous sights at Kekova, Demre, Myra, Phaselis, Olympos, Aspendos and
even Ephesus is within reach. Also a simple trip up to the mountains behind
Kalkan will surely take your breath away. Eating out at one of the many fresh
trout restaurants makes a pleasant end to the day.
Kalkan offers a quiet sophistication that cannot fail to take a hold on you–
